TILLY, Labrador, Female (ent) 16/09/03
Woolmer Hill, Haslemere, Surrey, Gu27 1QA
Start Weight = 37.6kg on 14/06/05
Neck = 50cm
Chest = 84cm
Waist = 79cm
Thigh = 41.5cm
Ant.Elbow-Ant.Elbow Shoulder = 73.5cm, 24 cm around triceps.
Starting resting heart rate = 92 bpm prior to exercise, 130 bpm after 10 minutes
Known Conditions; Left fore = Probable OCD, FCP, Arthrodesis and DJD of Elbow, Right fore =OCD , FCP and probable DJD of elbow.

AIM; As this dog is obese and needs to lose approximately 10kg to get to her ideal weight, the first concern is weight reduction, but there are added complications with the elbow conditions which both require orthopaedic surgeries performed. Firstly dietary correction to reduce the calorie intake in a balanced manner, and secondly to reduce the excess weight and increase muscle mass and tone in a controlled manner under instruction of her veterinary surgeon to increase support to the affected joints.

Current Treatment; None, weight loss required prior to surgery.

Feeding Regime; Changed to RCW Obesity Management, 125g A.M, 100g P.M. and a ‘treat pot' of 50g to allow reward training to continue without added calories.

Regime; 10 minutes flat walking daily, increasing in time, speed and resistance from incline, to enable controlled weight loss, general increase in muscle mass and tone and increase in fitness levels.

Tilly Crinage 3 week assessment continued ;
Starting resting heart rate was 92 bpm prior to exercise, and 130 bpm after 10 minutes;
Now starting heart rate is still 92bpm, but after 10 minutes exercise is only 107bpm.

Exercise tolerance has also improved greatly;

SESSION WALKING SPEED MINUTES TO REACH PANTING NOTES
1 3.2 k/h 10
2 3.6 k/h 10
3 4.0 k/h 10
4 4.0 k/h 8 Environmental temp. 28c therefore increased respiration
5 4.0 k/h 10
6 4.0 k/h 11
7 4.2 k/h 10
8 4.2 k/h 12

Overall, Tilly has shown a good generalised improvement in fitness, her exercise tolerance levels have improved every time, and her walking pace length has increased hence the increase in speed. This is due to both weight reduction, thus ease of movement, and also reducing her excess weight, and increasing her muscle mass, so oxygen carrying capacity is increased. Tilly`s appearance has altered, with weight loss around the face, she already looks younger; the reduction across the shoulders already makes her appear slimmer and muscle tone is becoming visible, and the emergence of a waistline, and muscle tone increasing in her abdomen, she appears less `barrel-like`. Muscle tone is also now visible in the quad area on the thighs. Generally, Tilly seems to have more energy, and appears happier, and livelier, and is now wanting to play and gain praise after her treadmill sessions, reather than being resigned to the process as she was in the beginning.
Aim; to try and increase the time Tilly spends on the treadmill to 15 minutes per session, and gradually start to incline the level also, to target muscle areas around the thighs, shoulders, and increase abdominal muscle tone.
